Though growing up she never had a teddy bear of her own, Judy Geagley is making up for lost time. Judy started bear making in 1987 to earn extra money so she could stay at home with her three children. To her surprise, what began as a hobby turned into a full time job. Today, her bears, bunnies, and other stuffed friends are sold all over the world.

Living in the Appalachian region of Kentucky, Judy and her husband Gordon (who helps with all aspects of the business from sewing to selling) are inspired by their family, friends, the roots of their heritage, and “good memories filled with love.” Judy’s grandmother Bessie taught her to make do with what you have, and never to waste good fabric. “People throw away so many things that could be reused or turned into something wonderful,” Judy says. As a result, she makes great use of old skirts, suits, coats, and quilts by recycling it into bears (such as Chance E. Bear), Humpty Dumptys, and other creations giving it a second chance in life and keeping a part of family heritage alive.

And every animal has a story. Tattered Old Bear was inspired by their youngest daughter’s love for her first teddy bear and how he became a part of their family. Tattered Old Bear was made to look like a bear that has been loved and hugged for many years. A story written by Judy comes with each Tattered Old Bear.
Dawg was created in homage to the stuffed dog their son had when he was little. He couldn’t say “dog,” but instead called him “Dawg.” He loved Dawg so much Judy would have to re-cover him when his fabric wore out, and over time all the hugs from the little boy made Dawg flat.
Bears, Dawgs, and all the others are made in the basement of Judy and Gordon’s home. The workshop is filled with piles of fabric and teddy bear parts waiting to become “real.” The couple loves working together and watching the animals come to life. We think you’ll love their lively creations, too.
