Alana Dlubak is a third generation glass worker. She grew up in a small town outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where her grandfather designed and hand-assembled stained glass windows. Her father eventually took over the business, transforming it by inventing different tools, machines, and approaches for making industrial glass. Alana has brought the “craft-ideal” back to the Dlubak family through her innovatively designed, hand-made enamel jewelry.

Dating back to the sixth century B.C.E., enameling is an ancient process of fusing finely ground glass to metal by heating it at high temperatures. Alana’s take on the process begins with cutting shapes out of large sheets of copper. She then files down the edges and sandblasts the copper, smoothing the surface to prepare it for her personal glass designs. The range of shapes and colors she has to work with is almost unlimited, and the application of colored glass cannot be exactly duplicated, so each enamel pendant and ring is one-of-a-kind. Her pendants are strung either on adjustable leather cords or strings of semi-precious stones.

Alana moved from Pittsburgh to New York City in 1995, where she studied Art History and Studio Art at New York University. She recently moved to Venice, California, where she currently lives and works.
