You love local food, local brew, and local music…

How about local furniture?

This October, come to New York City’s coolest new outdoor market, the Brooklyn Flea, to discover a bounty of fresh local furniture!

The Greenjeans Fall Furniture Festival will present an array of chairs, tables, stools, end tables and more designed and built by local furniture makers in the lofts of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the warehouses of upstate New York, and the barns of Vermont.

The Festival will take place over all four Sundays in October under a big tent at the Flea. A carefully selected group of six to eight furniture makers will be shown each week.

As always, we will offer as much ecologically responsible work as possible, including furniture made from reclaimed or sustainably-produced materials and treated with non-toxic finishes. All furniture presented will be newly built, the makers’ own designs, and beautifully crafted.

To learn more or if you’re a furniture maker interested in possibly participating, contact us.

BACKSTORY:

Around the time Amy Shaw and Jae Kim closed their first Greenjeans location in Park Slope in Spring ‘08, they started to bring selections from their shop to the Brooklyn Flea. Though not typical “flea market” fare, Flea-goers liked Greenjeans’ offerings (work handmade by independent artisans) and the venue was great for expanding the Greenjeans audience. Besides, Amy and Jae enjoyed the festive outdoors setting.

While developing the new phase of Greenjeans (planned to open in DUMBO in early 2009), Amy met with Eric Demby to talk about the Flea, furniture, and possibilities of working together. The Brooklyn Flea wanted more furniture, and Greenjeans wanted to meet more furniture makers.

Thus was born the idea for a Furniture Festival, co-curated by Greenjeans and the Flea, to focus on furniture designed and made in Brooklyn, with a few local/regional designers as well (upstate NY, Vermont, etc.).

The first Furniture Festival takes place in October 2008, and if successful, they may plan a Spring Furniture Fling, making it a bi-annual Brooklyn event.
