Opening Reception: February 6, 6-8pm

This winter, Greenjeans is presenting “Under-Cover,” a juried group show of small quilts with a new sculpture series by Jane Kaufmann.

Celebrated clay artist Jane Kaufmann of Durham, New Hampshire, created a brand new sculpture series around the theme of beds for this exhibition. Each of the 20 “beds” (most of them raku-fired) features a figure cheerfully emerging from under a narrative blanket. The “Flower Bed” (shown left) is festooned with yellow roses, and the “Feather Bed” plumes with real feathers. The “Day Bed” incorporates her classic Sunman figure.

The other half of “Under-Cover” features small quilts (all under 14-inches square) ranging from the experimental to the traditional, handmade by quiltmakers from around the country. Selected with Brooklyn quiltmaker Erin Wilson following a national call for entries, the group of quilts offers a taste of what quiltmaking is today.

All works in “Under-Cover” will be available to view and purchase from Greenjeans Online. The complete quilt submissions will also be on www.greenjeansbrooklyn.com.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

(Submissions are no longer being accepted, but these were the criteria.)

We are defining “quilt” to be a work composed of at least two distinct layers held together by a network of stitches. Quilts in all media will be considered.

Quality of work and uniqueness of vision are important regardless of technique, style, or material.

Quilts must measure no more than 14” x 14.” (That’s inches, not feet!) A few exceptional crib quilts (which may be over 14”) will also be selected.

Quilts may take many forms (wall hanging, framed or unframed, book, 3-D, etc.).

Initial submissions need not be complete (we’ll consider partial work and sketches).

All finished works must be suitably prepared for exhibition.

The quilts will be offered for sale through Greenjeans (unless the maker prefers not to sell the work). Quilts juried into the exhibition will be protected by our consignment agreement while at Greenjeans. (Contact us for a copy.)

Final selections will be announced on February 1. Quilts that do not make final selection will be sent back at Greenjeans’ expense.

GARBAGE COLLECTION
September 26 – November 7, 2007

This fall, Greenjeans is presenting an exhibition of new work by two emerging artists dealing with the theme of garbage.

Pittsburgh-based glass artist Matthew Eskuche uses clear glass to make amazingly realistic sculptures of crushed cans and plastic water bottles, discarded wine bottles, drinking straws, and other post-consumer convenience waste. Eskuche creates each piece himself through the flamework glassblowing technique for which he is gaining international recognition. The sculptures will be available in groups of 3 – 24 pieces.

Brooklyn-based artist Anders Bergstrom creates graphic still-life paintings, drawings, and prints of individual pieces of garbage. Crushed aluminum cans, stacks of old newspapers, crumpled brown paper bags, and broken baby strollers have been his muse for the past 15 years. Bergstrom often paints or prints directly onto found paper such as New York subway information posters or books he found in the trash around his Bushwick, Brooklyn, home and studio.

An essay written by garbage anthropologist and NYU professor Robin Nagle accompanies the exhibition.

Free copies of the newly re-launched American Craft magazine will be available at the opening reception.

Both artists will be at the opening reception, which is sponsored in part by Brooklyn’s applewood restaurant.

SUMMER SUCCULENTS
July 19 – August 30, 2007

“Summer Succulents,” our inaugural exhibition, presents 56 works of jewelry inspired by the forms and colors of succulent plants designed and made by Valerie Mitchell (Los Angeles, CA), Janice Ho (Philadelphia, PA), Chelle Kraus (New York, NY), Laura Su (Long Island, NY), Melle Finelli (Boston, MA), Kristina Kada (Felton, CA), and Alison Mackey (Telluride, CO).

All of the work in the show is new to Greenjeans, and much of it was created especially for the exhibition.

Succulent plants provided by Root Stock and Quade.

Exhibition poster designed by five and a half.
